CURRENT PAINTING

Here is the progress over the last month of my new painting.

The size is 24x30" and it is still currently for sale.

Today I begin the clothing - vibrant colours of yellow and blue! I can't wait for the pieces to come together.

5 October update

After many weeks, I think I am finally getting somewhere... still much to do with the ostrich feather headress, the background and much touching up... but at least now we can start counting the days left!

Amazing ... I took this photograph of my painting with my Rebel T3i instead of my iphone, and look at the difference in color quality!

9-10-2012 update

Sorry for the delay in an update, I have recently been very busy with my show in Healdsburg. It was a wonderful success with alot of support. Thankyou everyone who came especially to meet me, it was a pleasure being able to share my work!

As you can see, I have just about completed all of my warrior's skin and will be resuming work on his attire in a day or so. I am aiming to complete the intire painting by mid-October, but as always, an artist can never be sure :)

It's been while since my last update. Here's the last pic from May 25th. I was making excellent progress until I pinched an nerve in my neck (whilst sleeping violently) and since then I have been useless and restless to beging painting again.

Here's a picture of the progress as of a few days ago... The antlers are mostly complete, just needing a little fine tuning once I have finished the background. I have just  done a base layer in the foreground.. it looks very strange right now, but once the background is complete I will be filling the foreground with foliage in fall colors.

Friday, March 30, 2012

By the end of the weekend, all the fur will be complete! Before starting on the maginificient antlers, I will likely do a wash in the foreground and while I wait for that to dry, I'll begin the antlers.

March 20th

Here are some of the later progress shots..... it's exciting seeing it come together.

Wednesday, March 7, 2012

It's already March 7th and shamefully this is my first post of the month. Below you can see the work of 7 days of painting on top of 5 days sketching the moose onto canvas. I have drawn out the entire moose which is not easy to see in the photograph below, but you can see that I began with the head of the moose, which is much more exciting than doing the background first ;-)  The head looks a bit odd right now, suspended in the middle of the canvas, but rest assured - it will all make sense in the end. By the end of this week,I will have finished the head and much more of the body ... in time you will better be able to see the exact posture of the moose and his amazing antlers, a grand specimen!

The Bull Moose

Next up..... I am doing  my second wildlife (the first one being 'Salmon for Lunch', which is a painting of a Brown Coastal bear carrying a salmon). With the help of photographer Ken Conger, I hope to create a masterpiece on this next wildlife. I am combining various photographs to achievethe background and autumn colors I want, with a bull moose being the focal point of the painting.

This painting has not been sold yet but it has a good chance of selling before it is finished... the size is 30x40", so I'm sure it's going to take no less than 2 months... and maybe more than that. Keep visiting my blog to see the weekly progress pics..

Complete at last and currently drying!  I am so pleased with the outcome, I was not sure at first what to do with the background, but settled on a road as it creates depth and perspective aswell as giving the perfect feel of the surrounding area. The painting is set in Zululand, Kwa-zulu Natal where you find long grass, sugarcane and low rolling hills. Beautiful countryside. This has been a very rewarding painting and I admitt I am have become rather attached to it... this is the largest size portrait painting I have done so far, 24 x 36".

Almost there...

Well, I have finished the clothing with just two things left - the 2nd necklace and the background.

I might actually do the background first, so that it will dry in good time to be transported to the print house to be photographed before it gets delivered to it's new owners. I know it seems odd I do not always paint the background before the rest of the painting as most artists do, but sometimes I start the painting before I know exactly what I want to do in the background ...do I do a plain background with mood, or do I do something more interesting as seen in my painting 'Endurance'? Today I will find out. In the meantime, here's a pic of my weeks work. By the way, the pics I have on this blog are from a little home camera, so be assured, the painting is not quite done justice by it.

Here is another updated picture... I have finally completed the first beaded necklace ( I failed to count all the beads though, but you're more than welcome to try ;-). Today I start on the clothing.

Little African Child

In December I started a new commission of a little Zulu child. Her family were selling these beaded necklaces and other assorted beaded jewellery and dolls near Emangeni, Kwa-zulu Natal, SA. The photograph I have been working from is one of my favourites taken on this trip, such a sweet child!

I have already completed the face and neck and am now on Day 2 of the beads. No easy task I tell you ... when I'm done I might actually count every single bead ...each one done individually and as realistically as possible. Check back in a weeks time and I might have finished counting.

Here is a few pics of my progress up untill last week! Much still to do.
